Meet Bernie
Certified Therapy Dog In-Training
Bernie may have lost a leg…
…but he’s never lost his radiant smile or the ability to spread joy wherever he goes.
In February 2024, Bernie’s life changed forever. He was found stuck in a bear trap, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. One bullet shattered his humerus, requiring extensive fracture repair surgery. Despite months of recovery, his body rejected the metal implants, and by August, amputation was the only option.
Through it all, Bernie’s spirit remained unbroken. He refused to let his traumatic past define him. Like the legendary phoenix, Bernie rose from the ashes of hardship, embracing life with unconditional trust and an infectious zest for living. His resilience and sweet, gentle nature make him a shining example of hope and healing.
Now, Bernie is in training to become a Certified Therapy Dog. His story of overcoming adversity inspires everyone he meets, and his presence brings comfort in a way that words cannot. At home, Bernie is not just a beloved member of our family, but also a mentor to the foster dogs who pass through our 501(c)3 nonprofit rescue organization. Bernie shows that with love, patience, and determination, even the darkest stories can have bright new chapters.
Bernie is living proof that trauma doesn’t have to define us—it can transform us. He’s on a mission to share that message with the world, one paw at a time.
Today’s Good Mood Sponsored By Dogtor Bernie
Bernie might be missing a leg, but he’s not missing any opportunities to brighten your day. With a wag of his tail and a look that says, “Hey, life’s not so bad,” he brings a lightheartedness to even the toughest therapy sessions. His story of overcoming traps (literally) and bad luck with grace and good humor reminds us all that sometimes, when life kicks you, you kick back—preferably with one of your three remaining legs.
Bernie’s superpower? Making people feel better just by being his goofy, lovable self. Whether he’s plopping down for belly rubs, “accidentally” leaning on you for extra pets, or giving his signature puppy-dog-eyes that melts hearts, Bernie has a way of helping clients heal without even trying. He’s proof that resilience can be adorable—and that laughter really is the best medicine.

Disclosure Statement
Bernie is available to join clients during in-person sessions. His calm and comforting presence can provide additional support to the therapeutic process.
However, your comfort is my priority. If you prefer for Bernie not to be present during your session, he will stay home. Additionally, please note that certain Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) do not permit the inclusion of animals in therapy sessions. If you are utilizing an EAP benefit, we will discuss whether Bernie can be present during your sessions based on their specific guidelines.
If you have any questions or concerns about having Bernie in the therapy space, feel free to reach out before your session.
